The third issue that raised eyebrows is, for want of a better word, carpetbagging. While Jacobs was born in Iowa, he left the state and made his life largely in Texas. One of my former students chuckled and said, "We should ask Jacobs who was the last Iowa governor he voted for." Better yet, we should ask him, "Who did you vote for at your caucus in 2012?" The answer to both of these, I am assured, is "No one," since he has not lived in Iowa and has not voted and participated in the political process in the Hawkeye State.
Braley, a Democrat. SENATE RACE: More coverage, candidate bios
THE ISSUES: Compare the candidates' positions with our interactive tool
Second, Ernst also has two assets that appear to be solidifying her claim to be the best Senate candidate. The first is that she has had some, but not too much, government experience. Jacobs brags that he has had none. But a senator can only be effective if she or he knows how government works. The second is that she is a woman. I know Iowa has never elected a woman to one of these positions, but most people I've visited with think that a gun toting military officer who grew up on a farm may be just the ticket to attract new voters and female voters.
A fourth campaign issue that touches lots of nerves is the nature of Le Coq Sportif Fanny Pack Jacobs' business experience. I asked several of my politically active Republican students what kind of business he ran and they said, "A power company and he reorganized it, fired most of the employees, but the company was worth almost nothing when he was done." Whether that's accurate or not, that's the general sense of what his success was as a businessman. One thing is for sure: He made a lot of money.
As of today, it seems to me that the chance to take on Braley is Joni Ernst's to lose. And at this point, the smart money is on her to give Braley the toughest fight. He writes blogs for The Des Moines Register and WNYC radio.
Although there are five candidates seeking the GOP Senate nomination, the contest boils down to a race between state Sen. Joni Ernst, a National Guard lieutenant colonel, and retired energy company executive Mark Jacobs. Attorney Matt Whitaker, and former car salesman Scott Schaben just don't seem to have gotten any purchase and are underfunded.
Name recognition is 98 percent of victory, and she has nailed that down solidly.
That brings me to the fifth issue, money. Granted, more money is always better in politics unless it's too much of your own money. I have written about this numerous times. Candidates who fund their own campaign more often than not lose. That's because if you can get many people to give you donations, they will vote for you. If you write your own checks and get large contributions, say from Texas energy executives, you may not have your roots in the constituency. Jacobs has funded Shoes Fila Price
The Republican primary is upon us in two weeks, and we have now had a chance to study, listen to, investigate, mull over, and talk to friends and neighbors about the important contests. Rep. Bruce Fila Shoes New Model
too much of his campaign and that could cost him on June 3.
If no one gets the 35 percent necessary to win the primary outright, all this could be moot because then the candidate would be selected by the 2,000 GOP state convention delegates instead of the Republican voters. That could change everything, because Sam Clovis has the support of the tea party and they might turn out more members at the convention and hand him the nomination. He would certainly lose to Bruce Braley in November.

First of all, her two commercials have been runaway viral successes. The first one starts, "I'm Joni Ernst. I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm, so when I get to Washington I'll know how to cut pork." In the second one, as NPR put it, "The candidate, wearing a leather jacket, rumbles up to a shooting range on a Harley." She then proceeds to shoot Obamacare.
He also got burned saying Ernst was AWOL from the Legislature. "Absent without leave" is a military term implying deserting your post. There were howls of protest and he had to withdraw that ad.
Smart money in GOP Senate race on Ernst
I've talked with some of my savvy GOP friends about the Senate race, and the takeaway from all of them is that Ernst has broken out of the pack.
JacobsMark Jacobs' commercials are unremarkable. Stating that he has never supported cap and trade is like saying "I deny that I kicked the dog." Another ad features his two kids writing big lists on a board of what he can do, but it deteriorates into a cutesy squabble over whether he will raise their allowances.
